For The Win

Last week half of the U.S. Senate sent letters to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell castigating the team name of the league’s Washington club as a racial slur.

On Thursday, the team sent a request to fans to tell Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D – Nev.) “to show your #RedskinsPride and tell him what the team means to you”

What happened next may have been an obvious reaction to anyone who has been following the controversy, but likely not what the Redskins were hoping for. Rather than tweeting their support, fans — and likely those who aren’t — tweeted their outrage over the name and the team’s continued commitment to keeping it.

One Response to Redskins ask fans to defend their name to Harry Reid on Twitter; get predictable result

  1. MedicFL1 says:

If you’ve ever been to New York you know that one thing is clear.
The Indian presence is prevalent. Towns like Patchogue, Shinnecock Bay & Smithtown are but a few of the many areas named by, for or because of the Indians whom lived in the lands before Americans.
The town is Smithtown is named after ” Bull Smith “. His home is a historic site and there ifs even a statue erected in his honor at the intersection of routes 25 & 25a (Northern blvd.) His claim to fame was that he was given all the land he could ride a bull on in a 24 hour period. Is that shameful? Is that disrespecting the Indian heritage? should all those town names be changed? Consult a nap if the State before you rush to judgement here as there are too many to name individually.
Now let’s look at a name like the WASHINGTON REDSKINS.
Have they done anything to disgrace Indian nation? Have they used the name in a derogatory fashion? Are they not a proud team?
What have they done differently, lately, that would suddenly cause a few Senators to call for them to change their name?
You can I call them out individually, if you want to force them to change their name in the interest of fairness and equality you must have every town in the state of New York that goes by or reference an Indian nation or tribe, also change their name.
That’s just one state. How many other towns, cities, counties have Indian references in the 50 United States.
If you force want to change their name you must force all to change their names. Those that are calling for the name changes should also be responsible for paying the costs of each doing so.
