San Diego Chargers quarterback Phillip Rivers threw for 377 yards and three touchdowns in their win over Blake Bottles and the Jaguars.
UPDATE: N.Y. Jets lose 31 – 0 in a team no-show. Unknown RB gains 114 on the ground as Rivers throws for 3TD’s. Jets don’t cover SD TE (as they said they would) goes wide open for TD.
But the Chargers could only muster 42 yards on the ground.
Life won’t be so easy with the division rival New York Jets who are coming off disappointing losses marred only by mistakes.
The Jets just rushed for 132 yards against the NFL’s #1 defense and will add to that number against the chargers.
The Chargers’ running game is nonexistent due to injuries to Ryan Mathews and Danny Woodhead.
So Rivers was forced to pass more, it worked as he had his second three-touchdown game of the season, two to Eddie Royal.
Rivers went 29 of 39. His passer rating was 130; last week it was 131.4 in a 22-10 win at Buffalo. The Chargers are 3 and 1 on the season.
“We weren’t as balanced but we were rolling pretty good in the passing game,” Rivers said he “… spread the ball around today and that was pleasing. It was a collective effort.”
Royal had five catches for 105 yards. Keenan Allen had 10 for 135, both career highs, and Malcom Floyd had a 24-yard touchdown catch.
“We saw some things on film that we wanted to take advantage of, We were throwing the ball well today. You never know who is going to get the ball. It just happened to be me the last two weeks.” WR- Eddie Royal said.
Sound familiar Jets fans:
Rivers noticed that linebacker Geno Hayes was covering WR Eddie Royal, who processed to get wide open for a 47-yard reception to put San Diego up 10-7. That won’t be the case against the case against the New York Jets Defense, they learned that lesson against the Lions.
The Jets are frustrated and are switching up their backfield to confuse opposing pass happy quarterbacks.
Don’t look for safety Calvin Pryor to get beat again, he’ll cover area receivers, over the top cover our not.
The Jets are a respectable team being hurt by quarterback mistakes. With a boiling point approaching Smith may be replaced by Michel Vick should there be further mistakes. Rex Ryan wants to, needs to win.
Meanwhile the JETS defense holds at 4th in the NFL.
