The New York Jets have not won a Super Bowl since Jan. 12, 1969 — Super Bowl III — Kansas city Chiefs have not won since Super Bowl since Jan. 11, 1970. But it was those two teams and those two quarterbacks, Joe Namath and Lenny Dawson who legitimized the American Football League and the merger with the NFL.
Right now the Jets are one loss away from tying the second-longest losing streak in team history.
Losing to the Kansas city chiefs would equal the worst nine-game start, tying the Kotite Jets Jets of 1996, who finished 1-15. Prompting his firing and the bringing in of Bill Parcells who by 1998 had them in the Divisional championship with Vinny Testaverde.
The Jets now have fallen into the hands of bad leadership in GM John Idzik and the inadequate coaching of every team position coach.
While head coach Rex Ryan has suffered through inadequate player personnel picks, offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg has been sporadic at best in his play calling.
The Jets have made the change at quarterback to Michael Vick, which while it presents an upgrade the opponent knows Vick all too well.
The Jets have concerns as far as turnovers and rightly so.
“Assistant coaches David Lee and Anthony Lynn are terrific when it comes to drilling ball security. If they can’t fix him, no one can.”ESPN New York
“Hopefully, he’s the spark we need,” guard Willie Colon said. “He’s still Mike Vick.”
Vick is a left hander, a south paw, so there will be pressure on right tackle Breno Giacomini, who will now protect Vick’s blind side. His defensive man is Justin Houston, the NFL’s sack leader with ten.
It was HC Andy Reid who gave Vick his restart in the NFL. Now as head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs he has everything needed to get the Chiefs on track, including another former jet with Bob Sutton as his defensive coordinator.
Both teams present top 5 defenses in the NFL. A stunning feet for the New York Jets who lack any semblance of a defensive backfield.
Kansas City has the No.1 pass-defense in the league, the Chiefs have nose tackle Dontari Poe in the middle, cornerback Sean Smith who is relentless incoverage and inside linebacker Josh Mauga (Fmr. Jets) stopping the run.
Andy Reid knows all of Vick’s tendencies and tells, and the Chiefs took apart Tom Brady and the Patriots in September, and they are capable of doing the same thing to the Jets. But the Jets too Beat up the New England Patriots, Jets won every stat except the scoreboard losing with 41 possession minutes.
“Mirror images: If the offensive and defensive schemes look similar, it’s because they are. Mornhinweg is a protégé of Chiefs coach Andy Reid, whose defensive coordinator — Bob Sutton — served as Rex Ryan’s linebackers coach from 2009-12. The advantage goes to the Chiefs because of Reid’s intimate knowledge of Vick, dating to their years in Philadelphia. Mornhinweg, who also was part of that Philly crew, noted, “Well, the good thing is, I know what he knows about Mike.” Got that?”ESPN New York
KC has a running game with Jamaal Charles and Knile Davis. The Jets counter with Chris Ivory, Chris Johnson and Bilal Powell who can keep them fresh and relentless. Chris Johnson Percy Harvin can also be used on jet sweeps and out of the backfield in passing plays.
QB Alex Smith does not get alot of respect from the media or the fans, but he can win games. Something the Jets could not say of Geno Smith but now they will counter with Michael Vick a mobile quarterback who can pass on the run presenting his own problems for Kansas City.
KC’s Travis Kelce has been called a mini-Gronk at tight end, but their receivers are pedestrian.
The Jets counter with emerging tight end Jace Amaro, staple Jeff Cumberland and a hungry Zack Sudfeld.
The Jets also have the better receivers this time with the likes of Jeremy Kerley, Eric Decker and Percy Harvin.
Dwayne Bowe is getting a miserable reputation at KC. One reporter recently wrote:
“He’s got the talent, but he will go through the motions about three games out of every four, and then turn it on once a month so he can continue to get paid.
It’s shocking that the Chiefs haven’t figured this out and gotten rid of this imposter.”
Kansas City is fighting for a playoff berth, but this game is evenly matched in many aspects.
For the Jets stopping the run will be paramount. It’s the bread butter of the kansas city game.
If Michael Vick with only 1 week of practice with the starting lineup can come out and have a good game it will be more than surprising it will be the winning solution.
